Curriculum

Serving students from kindergarten through fifth grade, Claxton’s curriculum includes Common Core and Essential standards through the integration of the arts, humanities, Fundations literacy program and Investigations math program.

Curriculum Overview

Our staff uses a balanced literacy approach and the Fundations program to build a strong foundation for literacy. Likewise, Math Investigations is used to help students to develop mathematical thinking skills to support their understanding of essential math topics. Students enjoy art, music, drama, media center, computer lab, and physical education classes weekly.

Students learn 21st Century skills through the integration of technology, including two computer labs, laptop carts, Interactive White Boards in the classroom, closed circuit TV studio, wi-fi, and global connections with various tools.

Claxton is a Title 1 school; we receive federal funds to help us close the achievement gap between low-income students and other students. Title 1 funds provide us with Reading Specialists and instructional assistants for lower grades.

Fundations

Fundations is a multi-sensory, systematic, phonics, spelling, and handwriting program that teaches five areas of reading instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics and word study, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Daily 5

The Daily 5™ is structured literacy time that helps students develop lifelong habits of reading, writing, and working independently.

While teachers meet with small groups or individuals, students choose from five reading and writing activities and work independently toward personal goals: Read to Self, Work on Writing, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, and Word Work.

Positive Behavior Incentives – A.R.T.S.

Claxton students learn to be Attentive, Responsible, Thoughtful, and Safe through our ARTS Positive Behavior Incentive System. Through assemblies and class meetings, students learn strategies for demonstrating ARTS behaviors throughout the school day and while riding the school bus. Students and classes may earn tickets for exemplary ARTS behavior, and top winners each month enjoy a party.
